PARIS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday vowed to discuss the role of the European Central Bank (ECB) if re-elected with aim to boost growth in the single-currency bloc.

"After what we have done to save the euro, I want to pose not only the border problem but also that of the European Central Bank in supporting growth," the 57-year-old president announced in an open-air rally.

Sarkozy also stressed the need to change Europe in a way to bolster ?output and improve investment enough to accelerate growth as the Europe was created to "protect not to destroy us," Sarkozy said.

"If the French trust me, I will put the same energy to move Europe forward growth than that which I put to save the euro. The situation of Europe and the world leaves us no chance for error," he added.

Speaking to 100,000 of supporters in Place of La Concorde, the UMP candidate asked French people to help him building a better future for the country.

"Take your destiny in hand, Rise up, say what you want for the country, say it loudly. People of France, hear my call. French, help me," Sarkozy said

"April 22 and May 6 will not consist in choosing a side but to decide for the future Since the first World War, decisions that we have to take had never been so fraught with meaning. Extreme solutions would not protect the French, they would make them suffer more," he noted.

Entering officially the race to the Elysee Palace two months ago, Sarkozy still lagged behind the socialist frontrunner Francois Hollande who was expected to win the run-off on May 6 by between 9 and 14 percentage points.
